Another sheet of ice would be so great for all who participate in ice sports. I really hope that the new owners consider taking the facility back to an ice rink. There is a need and many people would be so happy to see the ice back in southern JoCo.

I do not speak for the curling club, but as a curler, our club is committed to the facility that will give us available ice to grow the sport. With the equipment we have, we can only curl at one location.

Pepsi was a good facility and we had 18 teams worth of curlers when they lost the ice. The new concrete floor improved the ice conditions for curling and we had high hopes as we added more equipment and looking at additional ice to add to our season

Currently, we are curling at line creek. Many in the club comment on The ice conditions have been more consistent and better than what pepsi provided though we have lost some membership we had build around overland park. In our first year we are now starting to see new growth around the northland.

Overall, I feel the return of 1 or 2 sheets of ice at pepsi would allow more people to return to their respective sports regardless of where the curling club chooses to make it home. Good luck and let me know if you need any help.

True. Should be a clarification that the former Ice Midwest had 32 teams. Plus, at the time Ice Sports had 6, Line Creek at 14 or so and Independence had 18 or so. At one point, my guess is that there were more than 65-70+ adult teams.

Good info and thanks for all of your hard work.

Just FYI... There are over 50 adult teams playing in KC at the 3 active rinks.

Klemmer is a great guy! Love chatting him up at Mavericks games. Bob's story is heartbreaking, but at the same time very motivational. That guy is one of the most genuine people I've ever met in my life and he's probably the biggest hockey fan I know.

I agree somewhat with the NASCAR races, but I would guess close to 50% of those fans travel from out of town to attend those races. NASCAR fans travel. And two NASCAR races aren't going to over extend the market.

I think the market may be overextended, but Kansas City is a different animal. In a recent article, Sam Mellinger stated that roughly 44% of KC's population consider themselves "diehard" sports fans, compared to the national average of 23% and KC's cost of living is one of the lowest in all US major metro areas. But again, it comes down to simple dollars and sense.

Does KC have the corporate support and the personal funds available to support a third major franchise? Corporate support? Yes. Will the local economy be able to support it? Not likely. But I think we deserve a chance to find out.

It's a great description of Tuesday night, and you make a lot of great points. Nothing I could question or argue about, really. I had a great time, but then, I went as a lifetime Pens' fan who grew up in Western Pennsylvania. If the Pens' hadn't been playing, I'm not sure i would have been there.

Which brings up a point about the game--the number of people wearing Pens' clothing. I'm sure there are a number of people who are Pens' fans because they're doing well at the moment. But there are a number of transplants like myself, who came to the Metro and the general area when the steel industry collapsed back in Western Pa. They came for the jobs, and they still root for the Pittsburgh teams.

I do wonder if they would have sold out Tuesday night if this was a repeat of the Kings and the Islanders from two years ago. I have my doubts. But since there is "no urgency" to get a team now, would it have mattered?
